Let's Celebrate HEMP!

JK Distro is excited to celebrate National Hemp Month!! Every July, National Hemp Month celebrates one of the world’s most useful and versatile plants – hemp.

Hemp provides an all-natural, eco-friendly fiber with many applications, ranging from clothing to paper to “hempcrete.” As a crop, it helps clean pollutants from the soil. Hemp also provides a rich source of CBD, the hottest new addition to the health and wellness world.

We pride ourselves in providing the highest quality California grown Hemp & Natural Products. Learn more about hemp and our products on our website.

Stay tuned all month as we share more about this amazing plant!!

Founding Fathers Loved Hemp

North America was first introduced hemp in 1606. Ever since, American farmers grew hemp that was used across multiple different products, such as paper, lamp fuels, and ropes. In the 1700s, farmers were even legally required to grow hemp as a staple crop. Many of our founding fathers grew hemp and advocated its uses and benefits. Notably, George Washington grew hemp on his estate.

DID YOU KNOW?

Upwards of 120,000 pounds of Hemp fiber was used to rig the 44-gun USS Constitution. This is one of America’s oldest Navy ships better known as “Old Ironsides”. About 55 tons of fiber was used for lines and rigging on Old Ironsides alone. Even more, Hemp went into producing the canvas used for its sails and caulking for the ship’s hull. SUPPORTER TO BAN

Although hemp was a big part of early US history, attitudes towards the crop started to change in the early 1900s. Despite the effective use of hemp during World War II, the government continued to include hemp as a part of its war on drugs. Hemp farming was eventually officially banned altogether in 1970 with the passage of the Controlled Substances Act in which hemp was included as a Schedule 1 drug, grouping this crop with drugs like heroin and LSD.

FARM BILL PASSED

In the new century, application of hemp started to diversify as artisans and small businesses imported hemp fiber for clothing and textiles. The first big win for U.S. farmers came in 2007, when two North Dakota farmers were granted hemp licenses—the first time in over 50 years. Building on this, a Farm Bill signed into law in 2014 allowed more states and some businesses to begin experimenting with hemp, under the guise of research into restoring this crop to American life. Ultimately, hemp and all its derivatives became fully legalized in 2018, through the passage of the Agricultural Improvement Act of 2018.

WHAT IS CBD?

CBD (Cannabidiol) is a chemical compound that comes from the hemp plant. It is one of over 85 unique compounds found in hemp, known as cannabinoids. Thousands of people take CBD for relief of a variety of symptoms or to promote overall wellbeing.

Your body naturally produces its own cannabinoids, called endocannabinoids. These beneficial chemicals help your body maintain balance in many ways by tapping into receptors found throughout your brain and body. Phytocannabinoids are plant-based compounds that mimic these natural chemicals, connecting with the same receptors and supplementing your system to restore balance.

HOW CBD AFFECTS THE BODY?

This central system helps to keep our bodies balanced day to day, including anxiety, appetite, pain sensation, mood, memory, immune system functions, and inflammation control.

Similar to how we use vitamin C to kick start our immune system, CBD acts as a kick starter for these cannabinoids to to keep the receptors working at optimal capacity and to help the functions of the body’s central regulatory system.

CBD VS THC?

CBD often gets mixed up with THC, which is another cannabinoid found in cannabis. CBD isn’t mind-altering in the same way. If anything, people who try CBD report feeling more relaxed and, often, more focused. There’s even some evidence that CBD can counteract the “paranoia” some THC users report. This may be related to why CBD seems to reduce symptoms of anxiety for so many people.

INTEREST GROWS

The return of legal hemp brought an explosion of interest in this crop and products made from hemp, especially CBD oil. Farmers licensed over 500,000 acres of hemp across 34 states in 2019. Less than half were actually planted and harvested.

FDA REGULATIONS

While the 2018 Farm Bill legalized hemp, other challenges remain for the new U.S. hemp industry. USDA regulations suggest the Drug Enforcement Administration wants to retain control over many aspects of the industry. The CBD industry awaits regulation from the Food and Drug Administration.

INDUSTRY CHALLENGES

Banking, credit card processors, and tech companies often refuse to work with hemp companies. It's imperative for companies to seek out the right partners to overcome the challenges within the industry.

ISOLATE VS FULL SPECTRUM

CBD isolate products are generally labeled as being 99 percent or more pure CBD depending on the form they come in. They have no other active ingredient and just aim to deliver therapeutic doses of CBD, isolated from the other cannabinoids and terpenes.

Full-spectrum CBD or hemp oil generally refers to products that not only contain CBD but contain other plant molecules as well. This version of CBD oil is minimally refined, leaving most of the cannabinoids and terpenes intact and in the oil.
