Cannabinoid 101 Series Part Four: What are synthetic cannabinoids?

In the last part of our series, we will discuss synthetic cannbinoids, what to look for when buying all cannbinoids and saftety concerns.

What are synthetic cannabinoids?

Synthetic cannabinoids are various manmade chemicals that some people may use as an alternative to marijuana. These molecules designed to mimic the effects of THC. Like THC, these synthetic cannabinoids target the cannabinoid type 1 receptor (CB1R) in the brain, which is responsible for the psychoactive effects of THC in cannabis.

Be careful of what you smoke, ingest or put on your skin. Synthetic cannabinoid products can be toxic. As a result, people who smoke these products can react with rapid heart rate, vomiting, agitation, confusion, and hallucinations. Some have to get help from emergency medical services or in hospital emergency departments or intensive care units.

What to Look for When Buying Cannabinoids?

When looking to buy cannabinoids, it is important to look for a reputable and reliable source. Make sure that the company you are buying from has been in business for a while and has a good reputation. It is also important to make sure that the products they sell are of high quality and have been tested for purity.

We share the third party testing results on all of our products so you know what you're getting.

Health and safety

Use of cannabinoids is likely to be more dangerous when:

  • taken in combination with alcohol or other drugs, particularly stimulants such as crystal methamphetamine (‘ice’) or ecstasy
  • driving or operating heavy machinery
  • judgement or motor coordination is required
  • alone (in case medical assistance is required)
  • the person has a mental health problem
  • the person has an existing heart problem.

There are hundreds of cannabinoids in the cannabis plant, but they're not the only ones. Cannabinoids aren't currently supported by thorough clinical human tests, but we hope to see more studies as more states legalize the plant in the future.
